Lymphatic Massage for Cosmetic Surgery Recovery
Why should you get lymphatic massage after surgery?
Our Post Surgical Lymphatic Therapy is the most effective way to heal after cosmetic surgery. Weather you have had liposuction, tummy tuck, breast implants, coolsculpting, or just want to detoxify your system from the anesthesia and post surgical prescriptions this is the treatment for you.
“Manual Lymphatic Drainage is the application of light, flowing strokes of massage in specific patterns with the goal of alleviating lymph edema.”
Lymphatic massage is very different from a regular massage, it is very light pressure and surprisingly relaxing. It can be hard for people to believe that such a light, unobtrusive technique could possibly have any real benefit, especially when compared to the regular massages we offer at Kalon Spa.
The lymphatic system is a delicate network of capillaries resting just underneath the surface of the skin. Pressure exceeding the weight of a quarter flattens the capillaries and prevents the fluid from moving. Picture stepping on a garden hose and the effect it has on the water flow, this is what happens if too much pressure is used to perform manual lymphatic drainage.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is extremely effective in post surgical recovery. Clients who receive Lymphatic Massage can expect up to a 50% faster recovery time. Post surgical lymphatic drainage should not hurt or be considered deep tissue massage ESPECIALLY in the first few weeks after surgery. We never open incisions or drain fluid out of the body through incisions, this is not lymphatic drainage and can cause more hardening and fibrosis in the long run as well as put you at risk for infection if done outside of the care of a nurse or surgeon.
If you are scheduling your lymphatic sessions months after your surgery date and have developed fibrosis or hardening of tissue don’t worry, we can address that using massage techniques and cupping therapy to soften the tissue and get your healing back on track.
When to Book Your Lymphatic Massages:
Ideally clients come in within two weeks of their surgery date (the sooner the better but we ask if you have traveled out of state please wait a minimum of 14 days after you get home to schedule your first appointment due to COVID).
We have the best results with clients who follow a treatment plan of 2x a week for three weeks followed by 1x a week for an additional six weeks.
Your therapist will work with you to come up with the best frequency of massages for your recovery process and each session will be tailored to your bodies’ needs at the time.
Here is our general treatment plan for post surgical massages:
Weeks 1-3: Two sessions a week of lymphatic therapy + gentle cupping treatments over stubborn areas
Weeks 4-9: One session a week of lymphatic therapy + cupping over stubborn areas + sculpting massage
